Considering they added a 24" iMac, what are the chances that they will move the 23" ACD to 24"?
I hope not, the 24" panel is not as good as the 23"
I bet you see a lot of complaints regarding photo editing on the 24" iMac. The screen is way too bright, and you cannot dim it enough for true color reproduction. This is an issue that is well known with the 2407 from dell. I am assuming it is the same panel.

For all you people calling Apple...Just wait a day or so and the web thing will get sorted out...It sounds as if Apple is just using the website too, so they can't do anything to help you.

At the very least, a 13th Nov release would take away [some] of Zune's press. Or at least add some Apple PR with every other mention of Zune (besides iPod).

It's really amazing to see here people justifying the price of Windows Vista, when not even corporations think about migrating to the "new" OS in 2-years time...Vista is just a rehashed NT, and no company will need it in the short term.

Agreed wholeheartedly; I worked for FedEx Kinkos for 5 years. On a corporate level - they stay at least 1 version behind on all their software. We were still running Windows 95b when I started there in 2000 (long after Windows 2000 had already been released). I'm surprised our monitors didn't have blue screen burn in; my god Win95 is the utterest of garbage in an OS. I'd rather run OS2/Warp or something. Anyhow, it wasn't until roughly 2003 that they finally upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional on all their computers (and updated the Macs to 10.2 (Jaguar?) from OS 9). I no longer work for that (now) horrendous company, but I'm sure they'll upgrade to XP Pro within the next 2 years and wait for all the BS to surface from Vista before even bothering with it.

Most corporations are this way, so (again) I absolutely agree with you. For at least the first year of its existence - no companies will be running Vista, only home users.

Second, has anyone else here used the public beta? I haven't seen any comments on it in the first 3 pages, but let me tell you...it sucks! I had to take it off my PC that I am using until my MacPro arrives and went back to XP.

From my experience, Vista Beta is full of bugs and issues. Yes, I know it is still a Beta, but if it is slated for a Jan 30 release, they have a lot of work to do.

I mentioned it on page 3. I've used several betas and they all suck. Bugs and crashes that come from using a beta OS aside - the system requirements are absurd. At this point I can't tell if the beta sucks because of bugs or because I no longer have bleeding edge hardware. Mind you though, none of my computers have ever pitched a fit at running *nix, Windows 2k or XP, or even OSX86.

I still don't know why the average person would change from XP to Vista--it doesn't look that different and doesn't offer much more to the average websurfer/emailer.

The major change is UAP, User Account Protection, which is basically a ripped off version of (Administrator) Authentication with a User access account that *nix and OSX have had for years now.

IMO Vista will undoubtedly add more Genuine Advantage, DRM, and Activation BS that I'll steer clear of that mess and keep running the old versions of Windows that already work trouble-free for me. When they stop supporting Win2k (after the 7-year (or whatever it is) product 'cycle'), I'll keep running it because IMO it's the best version of Windows that has ever (and most likely *will ever*) be released.

I won't wait in line either... but I do hope this helps satisfy demand. Lack of availability is getting to be an old/tiresome story. I want to buy an iPad, but don't want to stand in line from 3 AM to do so.

Merom in the iMacIntel does leave a space in the lineup for the Conroe Mini-Tower.
Enough already with Mini-Tower crap. It will never happen. Apple does not like to copy the PC world.

Except for swapping out a video card, why would anyone need one! You have two options, an iMac or a Mac Mini.

    I'm just stating pure fact:

Most of the people I know that shop at Wal-Mart don't own an iPod with video let alone a computer that supports iTunes videos. Most own super cheap or older Wintel boxes and some cheap flash MP3 player. They will still go to Wal-Mart to buy DVDs.

    What is Wal-Mart worried about?

Same here.. my MB started shutting down after updating to 10.4.8 (and the fan firmware update I think) It would shut down when I would just start her up.. or, as you mentioned.. after several hours of use. I formatted the drive and reinstalled 10.4.6.. but shutdowns continued. Weird.I read somewhere that starting up produces an early peak of stress and heat before it settles down again. This might explain why it either happens very early on OR when the machine has warmed up generally.

video and reading both require looking at the screen and less frequent input, and therfore would work well with a big screened, controls on back or sides style device.
The big problem is that the best display technology for reading (eInk) does not work for video, currently (too slow refresh rate). I would love one device for video and books, but it comes back to the ease of reading / power issue.

I'm just going to throw this very quick (and shoddy) rendering I made into the mix, portraying a possible "tabletop" iMac.

    http://i453.photobucket.com/albums/qq257/Ryuinfinity/imactouch.png

That looks great, and would be fine for touch-input (if it has wrist-wrests); but that's a horrible angle for a screen: you'd have to crouch over it to use it. Fine for very short usage, but would be incredibly uncomfortable for any kind of regular use.

There's a simple, fundamental problem with combining touch-input and a screen into one surface in desktop computer, and no amount of clever design can get around it:

The ideal touch device is near-horizontal. The ideal screen is near-vertical. Unless/until we evolve a convoluted spine or an extra arm joint, you cannot combine both into one surface, without having a horribly uncomfortable user experience.

The iDevices work because they can be held in one hand and adjusted. I wouldn't want to try that with an iMac!

The only way I can see anything like this happening, is if this new iMac is more of a dockable "iPad". Sit it into the dock and you use it as an iMac with full OSX functionality. Pull it out and take it with you, and it's a (slightly heavy!) iPad.

Now that I think about it, that might be pretty cool. No need to sync your Mac and your iPad, they're the same device!

    Some 'special event'...

They offered to 'reserve' one for a $100.00 down payment. Yeah, sure...

The MacBook doesn't need a Core 2 Duo processor. Apple needs to leave a gap between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.

There's still quite a big difference between the MB and the MBP even if they both have C2D processors.
CPU speed isn't the only thing to care about you know.

Yesterday, Microsoft inadvertantly released the pricing of its upcoming OS called Vista on their Canadian website. The prices were picked up by the NeoWin blog (http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=34770) and are also neatly layed out at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_vista#Editions).

Vista Home Premium will retail for $239, with upgrades available for $159. Additional licenses will be available for discounts as well. Vista Home Premium edition has evolved from XP Professional, Media Center, and Tablet product lines, and probably is also the edition which can most closely be compared to Mac OS X.

Many comparisons have been made between Vista and Mac OS X, and with many expecting Apple to continue its pricing tradition of $129 for Leopard (Mac OS 10.5), further comparisons can be made on price as well.

    All prices in USD

Not disputing the veracity of the article, but Neowin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neowin) isn't a blog. It's a tech site, founded in 2000, and forum with over 150,000 members and 6+ million posts. There are also many of us, including staff members, who have switched to Apple.

However, I can't agree that the Bible is "neutral" or relative in that it can correctly be interpreted in any way someone chooses. The Bible is clear in it's express purpose as God's revelation of himself to mankind. The Bible is judged and interpreted against itself using the literary and textual tools of interpretation that we have available to us.

Of course not any interpretation is valid; however, the Bible is very complex and contradicts itself in places. There is no set interpretation that can said to be right, rather a spectrum that can be justified. "Clear" is not a word I would use.

Like all communication it can only be correctly interpreted in light of the intended meaning of it's original author. This is where faith comes into the process. Followers of Christ hold to the belief that it is God's inspired and inerrant word. The living God is it's author and he inspired men to write within their own historical and literary context to specific audiences at a specific time. All of these contexts become clues that help guide us to His intended meaning.

This is obviously where we part ways. For me the Bible is the product of man. Nothing more.

God's word calls us to "love one another" and to be servant leaders in bearing one another's burdens. Westboro seeks to judge, spread hate, and cause dissension. Sure they quote scripture and hide behind an illusion of faith, but they take verses out of context and aren't living out God's commands.

However, you are still using one interpretation that you have chosen. There is no way to know if you are right. I agree that WBC are at the extreme end, but the overall message of the Bible doesn't seem to be clear. Just look at the issue of homosexuality- many "normal" (you know what I mean!) Christians find homosexuality difficult to justify, whilst others have no issue with it. The Bible states many times how "wrong" homosexuality is but other passages suggest otherwise. Both interpretations seem to be possible without stretching the facts.

So whilst it may be possible to say the WBC aren't living out God's commands, it's not possible to say whether the Christian that is uncomfortable homosexuals is living out God's commands or not. I would hope God would have no issue with homosexuality, but that hope is based upon an extrinsic sense of morality.

I agree that abuse needs to stop, but the underlined is completely and utterly false. This kind of abuse is so miniscule in scale compared to the hundreds of billions we are talking about here. The term drop in the bucket is beyond inadequate here.

Your entire sense of scale is horribly off mark.

Again, I agree that no public official should EVER make as outrageous a sum as $800,000 (hell $100,000 is pushing it in my book) but to suggest that THAT is bankrupting the country and not the big ticket items (healthcare, Military, benefits), well I don't really have any words to describe this.

You are just assuming this feeding at the trough is a miniscule drop in the bucket ... have you ever thought that the wasted money could be the whole Bucket.

Your entire sense of this Government waste is completely under judged.

To put the waste into perspective for you ... Bernie Madoff as one man squandered 65 Billion dollars.

The Military Budget is only 10 times that ...

should we shave the Military spending down to the 1.25 Billion they spent over one weekend on that G20 Party?

What you call the inadequate drop in the bucket ... would dwarf Military spending.

How about we trim some of this spending ... "Ontario Hydro Sunshine Salaries"
